Scouting and the draft
Every draft prospect has two grades: the consensus grade, and your scouts' private read. For how drafts work in every game, see Drafts. This page covers football scouting and the football draft queue.
What the grades mean
Both grades estimate the prospect's ceiling. They do not say what the player is on the day the rookie signs. A young rookie joins your roster under the rookie's grade and climbs toward it. So a rookie lands with a lower OVR than the grade you drafted.
You never see a prospect's true ceiling. You see only your best estimate of it.
Focus your scouts
- Open your team and select Scouting.
- Focus up to five prospects. Or turn on the Auto checkbox, and the game fills empty focus slots.
- Check back each week. Your read of a focused prospect gets sharper every week. At the combine, hidden traits show up.
Sharper reads mean better picks on draft day. To sharpen your eye, hire coaches with a high Talent eval rating. See Coaching.
Draft
- Open Draft.
- Build your queue, even if you plan to pick by hand. If your clock runs out, the draft takes the top player on your queue.
- When the grades disagree, trust your scouts' read over the consensus grade.
The draft is a stop in the offseason. See Run your season.
Draft order
On the Draft screen, select Full order to see every pick. A tab strip lets you pick a round. Each row shows the pick number, such as 1.5, and its overall number, such as #5. It also shows the team that owns the pick, with "via" and the original team if the pick was traded. For a pick still to come, the row shows the owner's top needs and a projected player tagged Proj. For a pick already made, it shows the player taken. The header counts how many picks are yours. The screen is read-only. You make picks in the draft room.
Draft report
When the draft ends, open Draft and then Draft report to see a grade for every team. Each card shows a letter grade, a short note and the team's picks. The grade compares board value with roster need at the time of the pick, and it is relative to the rest of the class. Sort the cards by Grade or Team. The report appears the moment the draft finishes.
